Due to domestic flights alone, South Africa will emit around 900 000 tons of carbon dioxide this winter. A couple of Green Goal initiatives have been launched to address this environmental concern, focusing on waste, energy, transport, water, biodiversity and responsible tourism.
Nike for example has confirmed its shirts will be made from polyester recycled from used bottles retrieved from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites. 1 200+ soccer themed bins are being placed around South Africa's main airports to promote recycling and will help people separate their waste and facilitate recycling.
Thousands of trees have been planted in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and Fifa will soon be able to buy "green" electricity, produced by the Western Cape’s Darling Wind Farm. Durban is planning to produce electricity from hydraulic turbines or biogas emitted by landfills while Port Elizabeth is greening it up with the production of the electric car, the Joule, for use during the World Cup.
