KwaZulu Natal Zululand Birding Route (600 species!) in South Africa
Mkusi & lake Sibaya.
Sani Pass.
Mount Moreland Millions of swallows arrive and leave between October and April in the Umhlanga area of Lake Victoria Conservancy at Mount Moreland. Thus, a R2,3-million radar system was custom built and constructed at the runway's end of the new King Shaka International Airport at La Mercy (Durban). Its scanners cover a 3,7km radius and reports bird activity clearly.
King Shaka International Airport 's bird and wildlife unit and its Air Traffic Control tower will be alerted by a computer system when a significant amount of birds are appearing in the flight path. Ornithologists and the airlines involved are deciding on what protocol will be followed in the future on flight delays etc.
Directions: Follow signs after turning 2,5 km west for Mount Moreland off the N2 on the Umdloti-Verulam road.
Keep in mind:
Free entrance - yet, donations are welcome.
Arrive well before sunset (and well before April when they leave again!).
